SACHA BARON COHEN's outrageous BRUNO movie has topped the U.S. box office with an opening weekend of $30 million.
The comedy ended the summer stranglehold on the top of the film charts by Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which slipped into second and third place, respectively.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said that though the film may have meant to skewer homophobia, it "also reinforces troubling attitudes about gay people in ways that run counter to the intentions of the filmmakers.
Johnny Depp's portrayal of gangster John Dillinger in Public Enemies proved less popular with cinema goers, falling to fourth place with 14.1 million dollars, 57 per cent less than the previous week. The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock was in fifth place with 10.5 million dollars.
